Effective September 2016, the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) now allows tenants who have concerns for their safety or the safety of a child living in the household to give 28 days' notice to terminate their tenancy. This is a decrease from the previous requirement to give 60 days' notice for most tenancies. The changes apply to monthly, yearly, and fixed‑term leases. These latest amendments to the RTA affect both tenants and landlords across the province. Real estate investors/landlords need to be aware of their rights and responsibilities.
Join us as real estate lawyer, investor and longtime REIN Member Shayle Rothman shares his valuable insights into what these changes mean for you. Learn:
1. The key changes to the Residential Tenancies Act,
2. The new notice period,
3. What penalties exist to prevent both tenants and landlords from abusing the new law,
4. And how landlords prepare and protect themselves.
